“Cinematically vivid with heartstopping dialogue, Apologize, Apologize! is an extraordinary debut about a family that puts the personality in disorder.
Welcome to the world of the fantastic Flanagans; a wildly eccentric Massachusetts clan that is both blessed and afflicted with an inexhaustible reservoir of old money, unwavering subversive charm – and a veritable chorus of dogs. At the centre of this maelstrom is sensible Collie Flanagan, first-born son and heir to his grandfather’s publishing fortune, whose easy life is shattered by the outcome of a casual afternoon outing. Affecting, funny and wise, this is a rollicking story packed with characters that are a delight to get to know, and are impossible to forget.” From Amazon.com

Apologize, Apologize! is a darkly-swirling mixture of humour, wit and eccentricities; a literary Masterpiece!”

Product Description – Amazon.com
Affecting, funny and wise, this is a rollicking story packed with characters that are a delight to get to know, and are impossible to forget.”

Apologize, Apologize! is a truly incredible novel. With an original plot and a unique story, this poignant novel pulls you into a world full of contradictions and extremes. The settings for the story are written with care and skill; you can almost hear the waves crashing and nearly smell the crisp, clean air. Collie and his family make up an unforgettable cast of characters whose tumult, emotional clashes are of near-epic proportion. This story has a way of wrapping you in its craziness and dares you to open yourself up to the rich experiences. With clever humour and intelligent dialog, this story (if you let it) will draw you in and hold you with an absorbing sincerity. This Author has a brilliant gift for weaving a story that makes you incredibly happy, then drops you into a murky pool of sadness. Elizabeth Kelly has written a compelling story of a family full of characters who experience jealousy, loss, sorrow, love and unwanted redemption; this novel is a literary masterpiece!
I very highly recommend this book!

Book Review – Gods Behaving Badly

Gods Behaving Badlygods-behaving-_badly
Written By: Marie Phillips
Published By: Back Bay Books/Little, Brown and Company an imprint of Hachette Book Group Inc., 2008, First Edition, 320 pages, perfect paperback
ISBN 978-0316067638

Gods Behaving Badly is a roller coaster ride of wicked-fun!”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Being a Greek god is not all it once was. Yes, the twelve gods of Olympus are alive and well in the twenty-first century, but they are crammed together in a London townhouse-and none too happy about it. And they’ve had to get day jobs: Artemis as a dog-walker, Apollo as a TV psychic, Aphrodite as a phone sex operator, Dionysus as a DJ.
Even more disturbingly, their powers are waning, and even turning mortals into trees–a favorite pastime of Apollo’s–is sapping their vital reserves of strength.
Soon, what begins as a minor squabble between Aphrodite and Apollo escalates into an epic battle of wills. Two perplexed humans, Alice and Neil, who are caught in the crossfire, must fear not only for their own lives, but for the survival of humankind. Nothing less than a true act of heroism is needed-but can these two decidedly ordinary people replicate the feats of the mythical heroes and save the world?”

Gods Behaving Badly is a really interesting book. There is some colourful swearing and brief, sexual content, but these elements were essential to drive the story forward and help portray the characters temperaments more accurately. It was as if Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Zeus and others…were living in a neighbourhood nearby; the author’s skilful story-weaving talents should be commended! It is really nice to find an inventive plot and a creative new story. I was rapidly reeled-in to the story of these Gods from Mount Olympus and the interactions between the humans in this story. Theses God’s are marvellously flawed. The interactions between the human characters and the unique facets of Alice and Neil personalities are mesmerizing. I was captivated by all of the little idiosyncrasies and the fallibility of these two, eccentric human characters. The plot moves forward with steady momentum and has some exciting twists and turns. At times you’ll probably want to give Apollo a kick in the pants or tell Aphrodite to stop meddling, but one thing is for sure; this story WILL NOT bore you!

Book Review – Romeo, Romeo

Romeo, Romeo,romeo-romeo
Book 1 of 3
Written By: Robin Kaye
Published By: Sourcebooks Casablanca, an imprint of Sourcebooks Inc., 2008, First Edition, 384 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-1402213397

Romeo, Romeo is witty and fun; a sizzling Contemporary Romance that will leave you with a smile on your face!”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Rosalie Ronaldi doesn’t have a domestic bone in her body …
All she cares about is her career, so she survives on take-out and dirty martinis, keeps her shoes under the dining room table, her bras on the shower curtain rod, and her clothes on the couch …
Nick Romeo is every woman’s fantasy – tall, dark, handsome, rich, really good in bed, AND he loves to cook and clean …
He says he wants an independent woman, but when he meets Rosalie, all he wants to do is take care of her. Before too long, he’s cleaned up her apartment, stocked her refrigerator, and adopted her dog …
So what’s the problem? Just a little matter of mistaken identity, corporate theft, a hidden past in juvenile detention and one big nosy Italian family too close for comfort…”

Romeo, Romeo is a fantastic book that I really enjoyed reading! This novel has an entertaining storyline that has a smooth momentum and a few, fun plot twists; the conclusion of the story has a neat little twist that surprised me in a good way. Nick’s wealth didn’t evoke the usual resentment or dislike and independent Rosalie has a quick wit and a sharp tongue that’s just a part of her charm. The chemistry between Nick and Rosalie is flaming-hot and virtually sizzles off the page! The sex scenes are frequent but not overwhelming and they are written with lovely intimacy. I know that the “rich guy” character can sometimes be overworked, but the Author has written skillfully and given Nick Romeo a great depth of character that makes you fall in love. This wonderful novel left me with a smile on my face and a peaceful feeling of satisfaction.
I very highly recommend this book!

Book Review – I Like You

I Like You is an outlandish cookbook with lots of recipes, zany entertaining ideas and heaps of unique pictures.”

I Like You is NOT an everyday, run-of-the-mill cookbook and entertaining guide. This book contains more then 200 interesting recipes and some very unique thoughts and ideas on how to amuse guests of all kinds. I was a little overwhelmed with the scrapbook-type layout and I was hoping for something a little easier on the eyes. This cookbook is full of old-fashioned photographs, but I found that the photographs overpowered the typed recipes and craft ideas. This book is geared towards women, though some men might enjoy the recipes and other parts of this book. I feel that this cookbook will likely spend more time as an entertaining coffee-table book, rather then being in the kitchen with the rest of the cookbooks; this is probably what the author has intended, all along. I will admit to laughing out loud at some of the crazy pictures and the little conversations that the Author has with the reader, but over all I would say that this book is not what I was hoping for.

Book Review – The Shack

The Shacktheshackcover-thumb
Written By: WM. Paul Young
Published By: Windblown Media, in association with Hachette Book Group USA, 2008, First Edition, 256 pages, softcover
ISBN 978-0964729230

The Shack is a unique blend of sadness, regret and tension; with a whole bunch of religion thrown in the middle.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Mackenzie Allen Philips’ youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack’s world forever. In a world where religion seems to grow increasingly irrelevant “The Shack” wrestles with the timeless question, “Where is God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?” The answers Mack gets will astound you and perhaps transform you as much as it did him. You’ll want everyone you know to read this book!”

The Shack is not at all what I had been expecting. When I read the descriptions of this book and all the rave reviews, I was chomping-at-the-bit to get a copy to read and review. As I began reading, I was blown away by the skillful writing and the story; the first four chapters, literally kept me spellbound! Mac’s horror and sorrow because of the loss of his daughter is palpable and so very moving. Then I began reading chapter five and what a disappointment it was…right on through to the beginning of the last chapter. Chapters five through seventeen are a communion with God, as the holy trinity. The holy trinity however, is a somewhat eccentric blend of ethnic persons who stretch the plausibility and the imaginative bounds of who God could be. For some, this book might be a wondrously creative look at the heavenly father, though I can’t help feeling that some Christians and/or religious people may well be offended by this potentially blasphemous characterization of the Holy trinity. These thirteen chapters include parables, re-worded scriptures, divine revelations and religious teachings; it is a not-so-cleverly-disguised religious conversion message (for the reader). Personally, I found the religious portion of this book, namely chapters five through seventeen, a distraction from the wonderful beginning. It had such potential!
This book may appeal to those who have faith in God and a religious and/or Christian background.

“Dan Simmons writes with the salty grace and precision of Patrick O’Brian. But in piling supernatural nightmare upon historical nightmare, layering mystery upon mystery, he has produced a turbocharged vision of popular doom.” -Men’s Journal
Greeted with excited critical praise, this extraordinary novel-inspired by the true story of two ice ships that disappeared in the Arctic Circle during an 1845 expedition-swells with the heart-stopping suspense and heroic adventure that have won Dan Simmons praise as “a writer who not only makes big promises but keeps them” (Seattle Post-Intelligencer). THE TERROR chills readers to the core.
“Brutal, relentless, yet oddly uplifting, THE TERROR is a masterfully chilling work.” -Entertainment Weekly
“In the hands of a lesser writer than Dan Simmons, THE TERROR might well have dissolved into a series of frigid days and three-dog nights. But Simmons is too good a writer to ignore the real gold in his story-its beleaguered cast.” -Bookpage

An exhilarating novel of romance, art, and food in Florence, featuring the beloved Margot Harrington, who graced Robert Hellenga’s The Sixteen Pleasures. Margot Harrington’s memoir about her discovery in Florence of a priceless masterwork of Renaissance erotica – and the misguided love affair it inspired – is now, 25 years later, being made into a movie. Margot, with the help of her lover, Woody, writes a script that she thinks will validate her life. Of course their script is not used, but never mind – happy endings are the best endings for movies, as Margot eventually comes to see. At the former convent in Florence where “The Sixteen Pleasures” – now called “The Italian Lover,” – is being filmed, Margot enters into a drama she never imagined, where her ideas of home, love, art, and aging collide with the imperatives of commerce and the unknowability of other cultures and other people.

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Two boys who have lost their mother tragically, worry they’ll never see their father, a Naval Commander, after he embarks on a secret mission with the United States military. After the boys are advised by their nanny to seek the help of St. Nick, the boys are shocked by an early Christmas visit.”

For the Love of St. Nick is a nice, short story about two young boys who live in an isolated cabin with their father. When their father leaves them to go on a special mission, the boys are promised that their Dad will be home in time for Christmas. As the weather worsens and one of the boys suffers from a reoccurring illness, tensions run high as they wait to see if someone will help them and bring their father home in time for Christmas.
I would recommend this book for children 8-14 years of age.

Literary “First Times”

Thanks for having me here today, Bobbie! I love your blog!

When I tell non-romance readers that I’m a romance author, the first thing they do, after a giggle or two, is ask if my sex scenes are autobiographical. (If they ask my DH, he just smiles and says, “Of course!”)

vexing-the-viscount1

The truth is I write explicit scenes when the story demands it.

Writers work with nothing but ink on a page and somehow hope to breathe life into our characters. We play on their hopes and dreams. We catalogue their triumphs and failures. Nowhere are these more evident than in our character’s sex lives. Even if a character is not currently sexually active, he thinks about it as often as we do. Sex is a ripe store house of emotions and motivations. Commercial fiction is rife with sex scenes. It’s not just for romance novelists any more.

It never was. My literary “first time” was not a romance book, at all. It was Rabbit Run, from the highly respected and recently deceased, John Updike. I was a junior in high school, an extremely naïve junior. The scene where Updike’s hero, Harry Angstrom, talks a hooker into giving him oral sex while his wife is giving birth was a shock to me. First because I had no idea people did such things (told you I was naïve) and second, because the relationship in which the act occurred was so cold and devoid of joy.

But did it deepen my insight into the characters and propel Mr. Updike’s story? Like a runaway locomotive.

Writing a sex scene is not about being an exhibitionist. It is not about me. It’s about my characters and their relationship. Which leads me to my first rule about writing sex scenes.

erinsong

1. It’s about serving the story first and foremost. If I can replace the scene with the words, Then they had sex, with no change in what comes afterward, then the scene is unnecessary and must be cut.

Not all stories call for hot, sweaty monkey sex. The bedroom door can remain completely closed and yet be totally romantic. Less is often more.

What to call it . . .

“The sun glinted off his chiseled pectorals.” No, that’s not from a romance novel either. It’s a Washington Post reporter waxing poetic over President Obama’s work-out regimen. It’s also a shining example of trite wording (why even mention a pec unless it’s chiseled?) and dangerously close to Purple Prose.

All writers face word choices and nowhere is it more important to choose the right word than in a sex scene. When in doubt over what to call something, I ask my characters. What would they call it? In the 80’s a romance writer might get away with “the raging beast of his desire,” but if I tried that now, my editor would have me in a headlock. Beauty of language is one thing, but there’s no room in any scene for, pardon the pun, flaccid prose. I want my readers with me the whole time, not giggling over my Victorian silliness. (Unless of course my story is set in the Victorian era, but even then I try to keep the use of euphemisms down. Or better yet, let one of my characters joke about the verbal coyness.)

distracting-the-duchess

So here’s the second rule:

2. Call it what the characters would call it. When the plain sense makes sense, seek no other sense. Technical terms may not sing, but they don’t confuse anyone either. And it is possible to write a totally hot sex scene without mentioning any body parts at all.

Not even a chiseled pectoral.

It’s about sex and . . .

So often sex scenes will stop the story dead. If we know what’s at stake, it’s more interesting. The basic tenets of the writer apply. What does my character want? How will he/she go about getting it? How can I, as the writer, throw obstacles in his/her path? What’s the subtext? It’s rare that both parties will be in complete accord. It’s also boring.

In Vexing the Viscount, both my hero and heroine are virgins. That means the angels don’t sing without a few fizzles and moments of comic relief. (Face it. Sex is pretty darn funny.) Two inexperienced characters lent itself to plenty of trial and error, some pleasurable, some frustrating. Fiction may be made up, pleasuring_the_piratebut that doesn’t mean it can’t be true. Which leads to my last rule . . .

3. The scene must be about sex and something else. For the writer, a sex scene is a chance to examine how the relationship between two people changes, how they feel about themselves as well as each other. A tryst interrupted, a near miss because someone lost their nerve, a wardrobe malfunction—these are all grist for the mill and a story propeller instead of a stopper.

Sex scenes, like every other scene, should reveal my characters, help or hinder their growth, challenge them, uplift or dash them. I’m not afraid to follow my character into the bedroom, or the library, or the . . . well where ever the action leads me.

Sex is part of who my hero and heroine are. It’s part of who we all are.

I won’t wimp out. I’ll tell the whole story.

An excerpt from Vexing the Viscount:

Daisy and Lucian have finally become lovers, but the games that started it all are still definitely afoot.

“Lucian climbed the stairs, his body thrumming with anticipation. Would Daisy be wearing that naughty red gown again or maybe the elegant corset with all those lovely lace ties? Perhaps this time he’d manage not to befoul the ribbons as he undid her. Continue reading

Demon’s Hunger is a really creative and thrilling paranormal romance novel. The story is refreshingly unique with electrifying and imaginative plot twists that leave you with a feeling of intense satisfaction. The pacing is excellent with a smooth flow that surges into the magical and sexual confrontations between darkness and light. The characters are very likable; each with their own story and fascinating personality. The romantic pull between Vivien and Dain is so exquisitely written and with such vivid detail that it leaves no doubt about this Author’s skill and talent. I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope to read and review more from Eve Silver, very soon.
I highly recommend this book!

Book Review – Warrior

Warriorwarrior
Written By: Cheryl Brooks
Published By: Sourcebooks Casablanca, an imprint of Sourcebooks Inc., 2008, First Edition, 321 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-1402214400

Warrior is a bizarre mixture of paranormal romance and animal perversion.”

Product Description – Amazon.com
“Second in the series, this sexy paranormal features a lovely witch with powers of healing, communicating with animals telepathically and fire-throwing, and an enslaved Zetithian warrior-a being from a planet where the people had a feline gene, making him sensuous, graceful, beautiful and remarkably virile. Tisana is an alien/human hybrid living on the planet Utopia, an Earth colony founded by those looking to get back to a simpler, non-mechanized way of life more in harmony with nature. The witches of Utopia are only female, rarely marry, and will only bear one daughter with a special male referred to as Leo, one of a band of Zetithian warriors captured when his planet was destroyed, and sold into slavery throughout the galaxy, has been beaten nearly to death by his former master, and is brought by his new owner to TIsana to heal him. Tisana cares for Leo, who finally stops trying to escape and accepts her ministrations, which begin to include mesmerizing lovemaking…until the two are drawn into a rescue mission by Leo’s new owner, whose sons have been kidnapped by a neighboring village lord. Pursuing the boys through snowstorms and sword fights, Tisana must locate them by communicating with the animal population, and she must find a way to win her new lover/beloved from the jealous man who would do anything to thwart her if he knew that Leo was her destined.”

Warrior is by far the most disturbing and nauseating romance novel that I’ve ever read! The story itself is wonderful and imaginative with fantastic plot twists and great momentum and the characters are well written and compelling. The heroine is amusing and really likable, while the hero is sexy and captivating. The lovemaking/sex scenes however, are a mixture of smack-you-in-the-face vulgarity and indecent animal sex with a graphic detail that, quite frankly, turned my stomach. Believe me when I say I have a very high tolerance for the creepy, the imaginative and the “out-there”, but honest to goodness, these sex scenes ruined almost all of the books potential, romantic worth. The heroine’s insatiable desire for the “protein” from the horse-like appendage, that the hero gladly and frequently feeds her is…OMG GROSS!
I could barely finish this book…it gave me the creeps and destroyed any desire that I may have had, to read any other book in this series.
The author deserves a lot of credit for originality and uniqueness, but the sex scenes that are so frequent in this book (as they can often be in a romance novel) are just too far-off even my weird-o-meter scale!
