Book Review – The Magician’s Book

The Magician’s Book,The Magicians Book
A Skeptic’s Adventure in Narnia
Written By: Laura Miller
Published By: Little, Brown and Company an Imprint of Hachette Book Group, 2008, First Edition, 320 pages, hardcover
ISBN 978-0316017633

The Magician’s Book is very disappointing; a literary criticism that makes for a heavy, disjointed read.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“THE MAGICIAN’S BOOK is the story of one reader’s long, tumultuous relationship with C.S. Lewis’The Chronicles of Narnia. Enchanted by its fantastic world as a child, prominent critic Laura Miller returns to the series as an adult to uncover the source of these small books’ mysterious power by looking at their creator, Clive Staples Lewis. What she discovers is not the familiar, idealized image of the author, but a more interesting and ambiguous truth: Lewis’s tragic and troubled childhood, his unconventional love life, and his intense but ultimately doomed friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien.
Finally reclaiming Narnia “for the rest of us,” Miller casts the Chronicles as a profoundly literary creation, and the portal to a life-long adventure in books, art, and the imagination.”

The Magician’s Book is not what I was hoping for and I have been putting off the review because I dislike writing really negative reviews; I have to be honest with my readers though, so here goes. I’ll start with the good points: the cover is beautifully illustrated, the title is really catchy and this book is fairly well researched. For me, that’s pretty much everything positive that I have to say. I’ll be the first one to admit that I am not a huge Narnia fan (though I liked the movies) and it could have a lot to do with my negative response to this book. I’m not sure that Narnia fans would find this book overly appealing, but only they can say. I found this critique to be very long-winded, tiring and not very interesting. For those who are die-hard fans of Narnia who also enjoy the dissection of the author’s life relating to the Narnia story/world, it might make a compelling read. The analysis, interpretation and moulding of the fictional story mixed in with pieces of non-fiction fact…well it was all too strange for me to enjoy. This book might have decoded the world of Narnia for all of the fans out there, but somehow I doubt it. The reader should know that The Magician’s Book is a blend of Literary Criticism and Fan Fiction. There is an index included at the back of the book.

Book Review – The Angry Smile

The Angry Smile,the angry smile
The Psychology of Passive-Aggressive Behavior in Families, Schools, and Workplaces
Written By: Jody E. Long, Nicholas J. Long and Signe Whitson
Published By: PRO-ED Inc., 2008, Second Edition, 166 pages, perfect paperback
ISBN 978-1416404231

The Angry Smile is an excellent reference tool that is insightful, accurate and very informative; it examines passive-aggression like never before.”

Product Description – From PRO-ED Inc.
“Learn the Powerful Skills of Benign Confrontation!
Step 1: Recognize the patterns of passive-aggressive behavior
Step 2: Refuse to engage in the Passive-Aggressive Conflict Cycle
Step 3: Affirm the anger
Step 4: Mange the denial
Step 5: Revisit the thought
Step 6: Identify areas of competence
What is passive-aggressive behavior? The authors of this three-part book have studied the psychology of this behavior for over four decades in both clinical and educational settings. They offer real-world examples and empowering, practical strategies for working with or when confronted with individuals who exhibit any of the five levels of passive aggressiveness.”

The Angry Smile is a fantastic resource for Psychologists, Behavioural Therapists, Counsellors, teachers, spouses and parents who have to deal with passive-aggressive children, teens and adults. This edition is useful and very easy to understand; with in-depth, carefully researched and documented studies that explain the progression of passive-aggressive behavior in children and adults, and it gets right to the point. At the end of each chapter there is a brief summary that sums up the topics that were discussed. Included in the second edition are: real life case-studies and examples, charts, diagrams, an appendix and a list of references. At times I found the content a little dry and I wouldn’t suggest this book to anyone who is looking for some light reading material. While reading this book you might be surprised by how many of these behaviors you have witnessed within your own family or in the workplace; this book will educate you and suggest some coping mechanisms to use while dealing with passive aggressive people.
I recommend this book to those who work in a professional capacity and to everyone who wants to understand more about passive-aggression.

May 19, 2009, NEW YORK, NY—Scientists have announced today the discovery of a 47-million-year-old human ancestor. Discovered in the Messel Pit, Germany, the fossil is twenty times older than most fossils that explain human evolution. Known as “Ida,” the fossil is a transitional species, showing characteristics of the very primitive nonhuman evolutionary line
(prosimians, such as lemurs), but even more closely those of the human evolutionary line (anthropoids, such as monkeys, apes, and humans). This places Ida at the very root of anthropoid evolution—when primates were first developing the features that would evolve into our own. The scientists’ findings are published today by PLoS One, the open-access journal of the Public Library of Science.

Book Review – A Reliable Wife

A Reliable WifeA Reliable Wife
Written By: Robert Goolrick
Published By: HarperCollins, 2009, First Canadian Edition, 304, trade paperback
ISBN 978-1554685035

A Reliable Wife simmers with dark, passionate undertones; a masterfully crafted tale of desire and betrayal.”

Product Description- From HarperCollins.ca
“Set in a small Wisconsin farming and manufacturing town still crumbling a decade after the depression of the 1890s, A Reliable Wife tells the story of Ralph Truitt, a wealthy businessman who advertises for “a reliable wife” in newspapers across America. The woman he chooses, Catherine Land, describes herself as “a simple, honest woman,” but in truth she is both complex and devious— not the missionary’s daughter she claims to be in her letter to Truitt but a courtesan of great beauty, kept by men and haunted by a terrible past. Catherine’s plan in accepting the marriage offer is simple: she will win this man’s devotion, and then, ever so slowly, she will poison him and leave Wisconsin a wealthy widow. What she has not counted on, though, is the passion she finds in this seemingly solid, forthright man—a man who also harbours secrets and whose own past is far from pure.”

A Reliable Wife is exactly what I was hoping for! This multifaceted story flows smoothly with some interesting plot twists. There are so many emotions simmering just below the surface of this story that they swamped me (in a good way) with their oppressive weight; it made me feel a little tainted and sullied. Ralph Truitt leads a constricted, colourless life as he hides behind decorum and routine. Catherine Land is running from something and wants to be a good wife; or so it seems. This crisp narrative is absorbing and intense; it is swathed in betrayal and pulsing with deception. Each of the characters is well developed and feels all too human. This compelling story reveals hidden desires and hidden agendas while striping all pretensions bare. Can Catherine be the reserved, reliable wife that Ralph is looking for or is his new bride a portent of doom?
I very highly recommend this book!!

Book Review – The Flavor Bible

The Flavor Bibletheflavorbible
Written By: Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg
Photographs By: Barry Salzman
Published By: Little, Brown and Company an Imprint of Hachette Book Group, 2008, First Edition, 392 pages, hardcover
ISBN 978-0316118408

The Flavor Bible is a comprehensive guide to flavors and how to blend them with food; a must-have for anyone who cooks!”

This reverence guide is versatile, detailed and it has been exhaustively researched. With many basic ingredients, basic cooking ideas and simple dishes listed alphabetically, this guide is a wonderful resource for anyone who wants to cook regardless of experience or lack there of.

Chapter 1: a brief chapter on “Learning to Recognize the Language of Food”

Chapter 2: a brief chapter on “Communicating VIA the Language of Food”

Chapter 3: takes up the majority of this book; it is includes “Flavor Matchmaking” charts that describe Taste, Weight, Volume, Techniques, Flavor Affinities, Suggested Dishes, Quotes from Chiefs and cooks from across Canada and the US and more…

Because of the sheer volume of flavours and flavor combinations that are included in this guide, sadly there wasn’t any extra room for recipes; instead this book is used as a handy reference guide for anyone who wants to plan an elaborate meal or simply throw leftovers together for a quick meal. The real beauty of The Flavor Bible is its universal usability for the experienced chief right down to someone who is about to cook for the very first time. There are detailed explanations that make sense and the terms and definitions are easy to understand. With countless, delectable colour photographs, this hefty book will take the guesswork out of creative cooking and inspired recipe planning, giving the cook confidence in their work, knowing that their food will taste great every time; no matter how many different ways they mix things up.

A note to those, who like myself, usually jump right in to reference books at a random page; you do NEED to read chapter 1 and 2 before you move on to chapter 3. If you skip the first two chapters, you are going to wind up confused and frustrated because you won’t know how everything fits together, trust me on this.

I very highly recommend The Flavor Bible to anyone who has the willingness to cook and the desire to experiment with flavors!

Book Review – To Beguile A Beast

To Beguile A Beast,To Beguile A Beast
Book 3 in The Legend of the Four Soldiers Series
Written By: Elizabeth Hoyt
Published By: Forever, an imprint of Hachette Book Group USA, Inc., 2009, First Edition, 368 pages, mass market paperback
ISBN 978-0446406932

To Beguile A Beast is a full-bodied, sensual Historical Romance; a sumptuous read!”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“CAN A WOUNDED BEAST . . .
Reclusive Sir Alistair Munroe has hidden in his castle ever since returning from the Colonies, scarred inside and out. But when a mysterious beauty arrives at his door, the passions he’s kept suppressed for years begin to awaken.
TRUST A BEAUTY WITH A PAST . . .
Running from past mistakes has taken legendary beauty Helen Fitzwilliam from the luxury of the ton to a crumbling Scottish castle . . . and a job as a housekeeper. Yet Helen is determined to start a new life and she won’t let dust-or a beast of a man-scare her away.
TO TAME HIS MOST SECRET DESIRES?
Beneath Helen’s beautiful façade, Alistair finds a courageous and sensual woman. A woman who doesn’t back away from his surliness-or his scars. But just as he begins to believe in true love, Helen’s secret past threatens to tear them apart. Now both Beast and Beauty must fight for the one thing neither believed they could ever find-a happy ever after.”

To Beguile A Beast is by far my favorite book in this series. I found that the first two books, though very good, lacked a lot eroticism and the necessary, passionate depth to the love scenes; Elizabeth Hoyt certainly makes up for it with this decadent love story which is the third book in the series. I have to say that I am a little disappointed with the book cover; I think it is absolutely gorgeous and the colours are divine BUT…I can see the male cover model’s face and it is not scarred; one side of his face should have been completely shadowed or covered by a hooded cape or something! Now onto the story… Sir Alistair Monroe and Helen Fitzwilliam are a most unlikely pair. Alistair has wounds that run much deeper then the skin’s surface and Helen and her two young children seek refuge in the one place far enough away from her pursuers to guarantee their safety…or so they hope. I was wondering how I would react to a disfigured hero, if I would believe that someone as beautiful as Helen could fall for him; thankfully my concerns were mostly unfounded. There were moments where I found Alistair’s disfigurement a little distracting, but the overall story is well worth reading. This novel is smoothly flowing and has a few predictable, but interesting plot twists. The love scenes between Alistair and Helen are very erotic; making me blush a time or two. I was happy to see more descriptive love scenes in this book and I hope that book four follows a similar format.
I highly recommend this book.

Book Review – A Lucky Child

A Lucky ChildA Lucky Child
Written By: Thomas Buergenthal
Forward By: Elie Wiesel
Published By: Little, Brown and Company an Imprint of Hachette Book Group, 2009, First Edition, 256 pages, hardcover
ISBN 978-0316043403
Top Pick

A Lucky Child is the deeply compelling, straightforward story of a boy’s survival in Auschwitz; he retained his humanity despite the horrors surrounding him on a daily basis.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Thomas Buergenthal, now a Judge in the International Court of Justice in The Hague, tells his astonishing experiences as a young boy in his memoir A LUCKY CHILD. He arrived at Auschwitz at age 10 after surviving two ghettos and a labor camp. Separated first from his mother and then his father, Buergenthal managed by his wits and some remarkable strokes of luck to survive on his own. Almost two years after his liberation, Buergenthal was miraculously reunited with his mother and in 1951 arrived in the U.S. to start a new life.
Now dedicated to helping those subjected to tyranny throughout the world, Buergenthal writes his story with a simple clarity that highlights the stark details of unimaginable hardship. A LUCKY CHILD is a book that demands to be read by all.”

The Lucky Child is a poignant memoir, allowing the reader to envision and feel all of the emotions and terror that Thomas (as a young boy) must have felt, while at the same time, maintaining a more detached approach (less gruesome) then many of the Holocaust books I have previously read. I was instantly drawn into this story and pulled into the absorbing narrative; this story is absolutely riveting! This smoothly flowing story has perfect momentum and keeps the reader’s interest from beginning to end. Thomas’ invaluable story really brought the Holocaust ‘home’, to me. As the reader visualizes what life was like for this young boy (and many others like him) during those horrendous times, it makes his experiences even more vivid and heartbreaking. I don’t want to give away any part of this book because it is Thomas’ unforgettable story to tell; only he can properly share with you the misery, wretchedness and the desolation that he felt while he was imprisoned.  Included in this book are 16 beautiful, black & white photographs and a black & white map (2 full pages). You simply MUST read this book!
I very highly recommend this book to everyone!!!

Book Review – The Girl Next Door (ARC)

Written By: Elizabeth Noble
Published By: Penguin Group Canada, 2009, First Edition, 464 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-0143168829
(Available NOW!)

The Girl Next Door feels a little bit like Friends with more depth and dimension; this multifaceted story will slowly pull you in and leave you wanting more.”

Product Description – From Amazon.ca
“A gorgeous and unforgettable novel set in a turn-of-the-century brownstone on New York’s Upper East Side, The Girl Next Door follows the stories of the building’s residents, showing their lives, their loves and the way they live together.
Meet Eve Gallagher in Apartment 7A, newly moved to New York from London with her ambitious banker husband. She’s lonely and lost…until she meets elderly neighbour Violet, who’s concealing a tragic story of her own. The Kramers and the Schulmans in Apartments 6A and 6B are about to find their lives intersecting in a most unfortunate manner when Jason Kramer falls head-over-heels for Rachael Schulman.
Jackson Grayling III in Apartment 5A is 26, fantastically wealthy and a directionless layabout. He’s attracting the attention of a gold-digger in 2B even though he’s far more interested in the beautiful and hardworking Emily Milanowski in 3B. And finally, plain, dull and self-conscious Charlotte Murphy rents 2A and works in the Public Library. She lives in a dream world and is desperate to be anyone but herself. Will any of her neighbours ever take enough notice of her to help her?”

The Girl Next Door starts off slowly, no doubt do to the somewhat long list of characters that you have to sort through. Thankfully there is a helpful ’List of Characters’ at the beginning of the book which the reader can refer too; I had to do so several times. Once you remember who each of the different characters are (perhaps you have a better memory then I, so it might be quicker for you) the story’s pace picks up and the reader quickly becomes enmeshed in the lives of these apartment dwellers. As the narrative progresses and the reader becomes more familiar with each of the characters, it is very easy to forget that you are reading a book instead of watching a movie. Each of the characters is well-developed with their own unique personality and distinct voice. One of the nicest things about this novel is how the author has blended all of their lives together in such unlikely ways; normally I can see the end of the book coming from a mile away but The Girl Next Door held many surprising plot twists, some of which had me in tears with poignant sadness that tore at my heart. I wouldn’t call this a light-hearted easy read because it has too much depth; this charming story will satisfy the innocuous voyeur in all of us.
I highly recommend this book.

An Interview with: Alberto Ferreras, author of ‘B as in Beauty’

Alberto Ferreras B as in Beauty

I am pleased to be able to share this fun, honest and insightful interview that I had with the fabulous Alberto Ferreras.

First, here is a little about Alberto:

A New York City based writer, filmmaker and performance artist. He has directed and produced the critically acclaimed “Habla” series for HBO, and his independent film work has been presented all over the world, including the prestigious Berlin Film Festival. As a performance artist he is known for playing “Doctor Truth”, a character who makes himself available in public spaces to answer any question with complete honesty.
B as in Beauty ” is his first novel.

Here’s what you’ve been waiting for; a peek into the life and mind of the successful author of B as in Beauty:

BCM: Who or what was your inspiration for the character, Beauty?

AF: Beauty is a combination of all the great women I’ve met in my life: my mom, my sisters, my friends… I hear them talking about the same issues, complaining about the same things: relationships, self-image, work… They are all so strong, and yet so fragile. They can swim across the ocean, but sometimes they drown in a drop of water. B is inspired by all their stories and adventures. But one particular friend of mine really met a Russian Madame when she was doing her taxes… the difference is that she never called her. B feels that she has nothing to lose and that’s why she calls her.

BCM: How long did it take you to write B as in Beauty?

AF: I wrote the book very fast—in about three months—and almost in a trance. First I wrote it as a screenplay, and then I turned it into a novel, because I realized how much fun B’s voice would be on the page. She made me laugh as I was writing her lines. My wonderful editors—first Andie Avila and then Selina McLemore—helped me a great deal in taking that first draft to higher level.

BCM: How were you able to get inside a woman’s mind?

AF: Being a gay guy, I’ve been fortunate enough to have open conversations with women that a straight guy would never be able to have. I feel that I can step back and look at the issues of heterosexual relationships with a different perspective. For instance: why can’t women take the initiative in a relationship? Why can’t women propose? As a gay guy I had to question a lot of issues that had to do with gender and society, and I’m trying to share what I’ve learned and reflected upon.
I also believe that women and gay men have one important thing in common: we get punished for being sexual. Straight man can sleep with as many women as they want, and it never tarnishes their reputation… but according to “society”, a guy who sleeps with guys is a “pervert”, and a woman who goes out with one too many guys is a “slut”. For society, straight men can do no wrong, but gays and women are punished for being sexual.

BCM: What are some of your favourite movies?

AF: I’m a big fan of classic American movies, and I watch TCM all the time. There’s a few movies that I can watch over and over: Bob Fosse’s “All That Jazz”, Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane”, the early Woody Allen’s films—specially “Crimes and Misdemeanors”, “Manhattan”, “Stardust Memories”— I love Lina Wertmuller’s “Swept Away” and “Seven Beauties”, and of course—the great inspiration for this book—Federico Fellini’s “Cabiria”, “Juliet of the Spirits”, “Amarcord”, “Eight and a Half”, and “La Dolce Vita”.

BCM: What did you want to be when you grew up?

AF: I was a compulsive reader when I was a kid, so I wanted to become a writer, that’s why I studied journalism in college. I wrote my first play when I was 19, and it got very good reviews, but, making a living as a writer is challenging, so I ended up working as a writer for TV shows, making movie trailers, and eventually directing commercials. I think it all became part of my training as a storyteller. When I finally came up with a story that I was passionate about, it wasn’t hard for me to sit down and write it.

BCM: How did you research the fetish-portion of the story?

AF: A few years ago I directed a documentary about a group of men whose fetish is to enlarge the size of their genitals with silicone injections (I know, it’s totally freaky). The protagonist had injected more than 2 pounds of silicone in his genitals. While making the movie, I became good friends with this guy and I realized that far from being “a sexual predator” he was just a regular guy—actually one of the nicest, most respectful, and shy people that I have ever met. That experience definitely shaped my perception of the “fetish” crowd. Then the film was often shown in special programs and festivals where other “fetish” films were presented, so I ended up learning a lot of information that never makes it to the 6 o clock news. I have a lot of sympathy for fetishists, it’s not an easy life.

BCM: Who are you favourite authors?

AF: My favorite author’s are Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, JD Salinger, David Sedaris, Julio Cortazar, Manuel Puig, Franz Kafka, Oscar Wilde… I read a lot of graphic novels too, I love Osamu Tezuka’s “Buddah”, Garth Ennis’ “Preacher”, and Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts”. Schulz was a genius. Oh, and guess what? Isabel Allende was my neighbor when I was a kid. I spent a lot of time in her apartment because her son Nicolas and I were school friends.

BCM: What is your favourite television show or TV series?

AF: Actually I hear more radio—NPR—than anything else, but I watch a lot of Comedy Central shows, like “South Park,” “the Daily Show,” and the hysterically funny “Strangers with Candy”. I also like “Chelsea Lately” and “Project Runway,” but my favorite TV show is “The Antique Road Show”, even though I’ve never bought an antique in my life. When I’m depressed I watch back-to-back episodes of “The Golden Girls”. It’s like comfort food.

BCM: What are your favourite foods?

AF: I’m big on chocolate (no pun intended). I like really fancy chocolate like Teuscher and troffles from La Maison au Chocolat. I believe that there’s no problem that won’t melt away with a spoonful of Nutella.

BCM: What is your favourite drink, ie: Vodka on the rocks, A Manhattan, etc.?

AF: I think that it was Picasso who said that Martini’s are like boobs: 1 is not enough, 3 are two many, but 2 are perfect, and I have to agree with that. Vodka Martinis are high on my list (I’m afraid of gin) but every once in a while I crave sake or bourbon. My philosophy is “never mix never worry” so I never mix alcohols or sugars in my drinks (so no appletinis, cosmos, or even rum and coke).

BCM: At what age did you begin your writing career; non professional and professional?

AF: I’ve been writing since I was 8. When I was 12, a couple of friends and I created a very popular magazine in high school and I ended up writing 80 percent of the stories in it. When I was 19 I wrote my first play—and got pretty good reviews—, and I started working for magazines as a freelance writer. When I was 24 I started working in television and I did a lot of commercials, promos, behind the scenes, documentaries. The strangest writing job I ever did was doing lyrics for Madonna—I did the Spanish version of her song “What it feels like for a Girl”—it was a wonderful experience (but didn’t make as much money as I thought it would!). I would have loved to write music for a living but the music business is very difficult.

BCM: What do you do to relax and unwind after a long day?

AF: I watch the Home Shopping Network—but I never buy anything—isn’t that weird?

BCM: What were you hoping that your readers would take away from B as In Beauty?

AF: I think we are constantly bombarded with messages of youth and beauty. The media is always filling our minds with reasons to feel insecure. I would like the reader to understand how important is to live in the present, and never put your life on hold. We have to live in the present. Don’t wait until you lose the weight—or until you get the hair transplant—to go out and live your life. If you are looking for love, you’ll find it when the time is right. Life is very short and we shouldn’t put our lives on hold for anything or anybody.

BCM: Are you planning to write more books in the future?

AF: I’m doing research for my second novel I think I’m up to something good but—can’t talk about it!

BCM: What would be your dream vacation?

AF: A place where I can write in the morning, swim in the afternoon, and read in the evening. And if there’s a dive nearby where they mix a decent martini, I might never leave.

BCM: Is there anything else you would like to share with us?

AF: One of the best things about the Internet is that it creates communities. I’m amazed at all the bloggers and readers out there talking so seriously and honestly about books—while the mass media pays so little attention to them. So thanks, hugs, keep reading, keep writing and keep blogging!!!

Happy Mother’s Day to all you Lovely Ladies!

My Mothers Day Gift

Happy Mother’s Day!!!

Now, before I go any further, I want to explain the picture (above).  My son Joe who will soon to be 11 years old, asked for a bunch of pictures a few weeks ago, of him and I as well of pictures of him all by himself; I was a little concerned about parting with these pictures because I treasure them all so much. Well, I’m so glad I let him have the pictures he wanted…

When Joe got home from school today he asked me to open the Mother’s Day gift that he made for me at school. I asked if we could wait until Sunday but he REALLY wanted me to open it today so I gathered Joe and Hubby around me and slowly opened it. The first thought that ran through my head was OMG, my sweet little boy made this for me all by himself…then I opened the homemade picture album (made from small brown lunch sacks, pretty papers, shells, some frilly fabric – the open ends of the three brown bags, have 2 pictures each, that pull out on little bits of yarn) and as I looked through it I started blubbering like a baby!!!  I’m serious, my eyes were so full of tears that I couldn’t see without wiping them away every few seconds! Looking though the beautiful album and seeing Joe smile at me as he watched me crying tears of joy…it was the very best Mother’s Day Gift I could ever have asked for!! It was the most adorable creation I had ever laid eyes on (other then when Joe when he was born) and I needed to share it with all of my wonderful friends here.

My hope is that each of you have a Mother’s Day filled love from your children and the rest of your family! Our children are the reason we have this wonderful day to celebrate so make sure you hug em’ and kiss em’ with all your might, and don’t forget to tell YOUR Mother how much you love her!

If you’d like too, please share your Mother’s Day story with us here…

Big (((((HUGS))))) to you all.

Wild Highland Magic is the perfect blend of fantasy, romance and fast-paced adventure.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“As soon as she laid eyes on him, her animal instincts took over.
For generations, the MacInnes werewolves have been guarding the portal between Earth and the Drakkyn realm. Bastian and his sister came through the portal from Drakkyn, seeking sanctuary in the beautiful Scottish Highlands and relief from the curse that haunts him. Solitary and despairing, Bastian must find a way to break the curse or it will kill him.
A family squabble 25 years ago drove a rift between the MacInnes alpha and his brother, and Catrionna MacInnes has never met her MacInnes relatives nor had any guidance in how to be a werewolf. When her father brings his family to Scotland seeking reconciliation, Cat lays eyes on Bastian, and her most basic animal instincts kick in. Bastian tries to resist Cat – no good can come of their attraction – but she won’t take no for an answer. She knows that all she wants – what she must have – is to mark him as her own.”

Wild Highland Magic is a very satisfying read. I was a little apprehensive about this book because often times it is very difficult to blend fantasy together with real life and make is convincing; lucky for us, Kendra was able to write this story with seamless ease and it is riveting! This smoothly flowing novel has a few plot twists, though nothing much unexpected. I found it a little difficult to keep all the different tribes/kinds of characters, apart; initially, I had to refer to the helpful descriptions at the front of the book. These vivid, unique worlds that Kendra has created are really something to behold; it’s very difficult to describe how fantastical yet believable these places are and I was intrigued by all of the different aspects of this novel. Each of the characters is well developed. I enjoyed the sizzle between Catrionna (Cat) and Bastian; they give new meaning to love at first sight. The sex scenes are piping hot with sensual aggression and steamy love-play. Poppy (Cat’s youngest sister) and Lucien are a wonderful contrast to the type of relationship that Cat and Bastian have; they are both sarcastic and somewhat unwilling in love. I didn’t want this story to end and when I reached the final page, I still wanted to read more about these amazing characters…I’m looking forward to many more books in the series, I hope!
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from beginning to end and I highly recommend it!
