Michael Jackson DIED June 25th, 2009… what a terrible loss!

From MSNBC.com

Michael Jackson, the sensationally gifted child star who rose to become the “King of Pop” and the biggest celebrity in the world only to fall from his throne in a freakish series of scandals, died Thursday. He was 50.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. Ed Winter, the assistant chief coroner for Los Angeles County, confirmed his office had been notified of the death and would handle the investigation.

The circumstances of Jackson’s death were not immediately clear. Jackson was not breathing when Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to a call at his Los Angeles home about 12:30 p.m., Capt. Steve Ruda told the Los Angeles Times. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to the hospital, Ruda told the newspaper.

Jackson’s death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music’s premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album “Thriller” — which included the blockbuster hits “Beat It,” “Billie Jean” and “Thriller” — is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

The public first knew him in the late 1960s, when as a boy he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the music group he formed with his four older brothers. Among their No. 1 hits were “I Want You Back,” “ABC” and “I’ll Be There.”

AP

Ranked with Elvis, Beatles
He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched voice punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks second only to his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

“For Michael to be taken away from us so suddenly at such a young age, I just don’t have the words,” said Quincy Jones, who produced “Thriller.” “He was the consummate entertainer and his contributions and legacy will be felt upon the world forever. I’ve lost my little brother today, and part of my soul has gone with him.”

Jackson ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music’s biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie, and Jackson’s death immediately evoked that of Presley himself, who died at age 42 in 1977.

As years went by, Jackson became an increasingly freakish figure — a middle-aged man-child weirdly out of touch with grown-up life. His skin became lighter, his nose narrower, and he spoke in a breathy, girlish voice. He surrounded himself with children at his Neverland Ranch, often wore a germ mask while traveling and kept a pet chimpanzee named Bubbles as one of his closest companions.

“It seemed to me that his internal essence was at war with the norms of the world. It’s as if he was trying to defy gravity,” said Michael Levine, a Hollywood publicist who represented Jackson in the early 1990s. He called Jackson a “disciple of P.T. Barnum” and said the star appeared fragile at the time but was “much more cunning and shrewd about the industry than anyone knew.”

In 2005, he was cleared of charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at Neverland in 2003. He had been accused of plying the boy with alcohol and groping him, and of engaging in strange and inappropriate behavior with other children.

The case followed years of rumors about Jackson and young boys. In a TV documentary, he had acknowledged sharing his bed with children, a practice he described as sweet and not at all sexual.

Despite the acquittal, the lurid allegations that came out in court took a fearsome toll on his career and image, and he fell into serious financial trouble.

Comeback had been planned
Jackson was preparing for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13. He was in rehearsals in Los Angeles for the concert, an extravaganza that was to capture the classic Jackson magic: showstopping dance moves, elaborate staging and throbbing dance beats.

Singer Dionne Warwick said: “Michael was a friend and undoubtedly one of the world’s greatest entertainers that I fortunately had the pleasure of working with. … We have lost an icon in our industry.”

Hundreds of people gathered outside the hospital as word of his death spread. The emergency entrance at the UCLA Medical Center, which is near Jackson’s rented home, was roped off with police tape.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Michael Jackson has just died,” a woman boarding a Manhattan bus called out shortly after the news was announced. Immediately many riders reached for their cell phones.

So many people wanted to verify the early reports of Jackson’s death that the computers running Google’s news section interpreted the fusillade of “Michael Jackson” requests as an automated attack for about half an hour Thursday evening.

In New York’s Times Square, a low groan went up in the crowd when a screen flashed that Jackson had died, and people began relaying the news to friends by cell phone.

“No joke. King of Pop is no more. Wow,” Michael Harris, 36, of New York City, read from a text message a friend sent to his telephone. “It’s like when Kennedy was assassinated. I will always remember being in Times Square when Michael Jackson died.”

Book Review – Holly’s Inbox (ARC)

Holly’s InboxHolly's Inbox
Written By: Holly Denham (Bill Surie)
Published By: Sourcebooks Casablanca, an imprint of Sourcebooks Inc., 2009 (originally published in 2007), 672 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-1402219030
(Available NOW!)

Holly’s Inbox is addictive and entertaining; a fresh, fun take on inter-office politics and romance in the workplace.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“System alert: Inbox full of scandal, romance, and office hilarity!
Meet Holly Denham. It’s her first day as a receptionist at a London investment bank and inexperienced Holly is struggling. How’s a working girl supposed to have a love life with a demanding job, crazy friends, a dysfunctional family, and gossipy colleagues? Not to mention that Holly’s been keeping a secret from everyone – and the past is about to catch up with her.
An affair with a sexy VP heats things up at the office, but when Holly’s first flame (who, she thinks, left her in the lurch) gets a job at the same company, complications abound and Holly’s inbox becomes a daily source of drama, laughter and scandal.”

Holly’s Inbox is written in an email format which is unique and for me, a little distracting as well (having to check on who the emails are to and from all of the time). Holly’s new job as a receptionist gets a rocky start and she gets more than she’s bargained for with the new employees that she communicates with. As she settles in, Holly finds a new love interest who provides a great deal of fodder for the email gossip-mill. The story is told via emails that Holly and the other characters send to one another. For the most part, it is fairly enjoyable to read; the first 2/3′s of the book was a little slow for me but I am happy to tell you that it picked up in a BIG way after that and it finished with a satisfying, well written ending! As I read through the book, I began to care about Holly and how I hoped her life would turn out…as I said before, the last 1/3 of the book is where Holly’s story really starts to seize the reader’s attention. The story isn’t as fluid as I would have liked; it is broken up by the email format and the constant back and forth between the different email senders. The plot consists of some fairly typical office-type romances and the stresses that office workers deal with on the job.
Make sure you check out www.hollysinbox.com/ to visit the fun, interactive website that looks like Holly’s REAL inbox!

Book Review – The Poison Garden

The Poison GardenThe Poison Garden
Written By: Sarah Singleton
Published By: Simon and Schuster UK, 2009, 284 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-1847382979

The Poison Garden is a fantastic story of Ancient Guilds, Magic and discovery; this YA fiction is simply brilliant!”

Product Description- From Amazon.co.uk
“It is the 1850′s, and a young boy, Thomas, leaves his family to be apprenticed to a pharmacist, at the behest of his dead grandmother. He also inherits a magical box from her, which provides him entry into a mysterious garden. But while visiting it, he sees a ghostly vision of his grandmother, who tells him she was poisoned, and warns him that he must find the person responsible, and save her precious garden. For she was one of five members of an arcane guild, each of whom cultivated an individual garden, mastering the art of poison, perfume and medicine. The guild members jostle for power as, one by one, they are murdered…can Thomas solve the mystery, before he in turn is threatened?”

The Poison Garden had me captivated from page one; with vivid scenery and flowing prose, this YA novel creates a world that is 1 part historical and 1 part fantastical. This story has a rather dark undertone throughout; it certainly isn’t a feel-good read, but it isn’t meant to be either. With curiosity, a thirst for adventure and at his Grandmother’s behest, Thomas becomes a chemist’s apprentice where he finds himself evermore entangled in an ancient, secret Guild; life in the real world doesn’t compare with what the secret Society holds in store for him. This is the first book by Sarah Singleton that I have read and reviewed and I sincerely hope that it won’t be the last; I just love this book! The story flows smoothly for the most part, with only a few inconsistencies which were very minor. The plot is packed-full of unique and meticulously described “alternate dimensions”, as I would call them; it is vibrant and eerie at the same time. Each of the characters is unique and explored in a fair amount of detail; Thomas is the most carefully developed character who the reader will enjoy rooting for, because of his determined strength of will and his innate goodness. I will be watching for more books in this series as there are 7 gardens in Eden and each one is sure to be a new, exciting adventure, in itself.
I very highly recommend this book for young adults, 12 and up.

Book Review – My Cousin Rachel

My Cousin RachelMy_Cousin_Rachel
Written By: Daphne du Maurier
Published By: Sourcebooks Landmark, an Imprint of Sourcebooks Inc., 2009 (Originally Published in 1951), 392 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-1402217098

My Cousin Rachel is a captivating Gothic story that pulses with emotion and dark undercurrents; you don’t want to miss it!”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Philip Ashley’s older cousin Ambrose, who raised the orphaned Philip as his own son, has died in Rome. Philip, the heir to Ambrose’s beautiful English estate, is crushed that the man he loved died far from home. He is also suspicious. While in Italy, Ambrose fell in love with Rachel, a beautiful English and Italian woman. But the final, brief letters Ambrose wrote hint that his love had turned to paranoia and fear.
Now Rachel has arrived at Philip’s newly inherited estate. Could this exquisite woman, who seems to genuinely share Philip’s grief at Ambrose’s death, really be as cruel as Philip imagined? Or is she the kind, passionate woman with whom Ambrose fell in love? Philip struggles to answer this question, knowing Ambrose’s estate, and his own future, will be destroyed if his answer is wrong.”

My Cousin Rachel is the second book by Daphne du Maurier that I have read and reviewed; I’ve enjoyed this story ever-so-much-more then Frenchman’s Creek. The flowing plot includes some startling, yet very satisfying twists and turns that encourage the reader to devour the book’s content as quickly as possible, so they can find out more; it led me on a exciting chase of emotional ups and downs, during which time I was aware of the dark undertones suggesting that people might not be who they seem. Some gentle clues within the story nudge the reader in one direction while Philip Ashley’s naivety and inexperience with women forces the story to go another. This book is an easy read; the story flowed off the page and allowed me to escape into Philip and Rachel’s world for a few, extremely entertaining hours. This novel reminds me a little of A Reliable Wife by Robert Goolrick; if you love one, you will likely enjoy the other.
I very highly recommend this book!

MakeUp Tentacle…Ultimate FAIL!

MakeUp Tentacle… Are you kidding me???

Makeup Tenticle
From: Sympatico, MSN – Autos

By David Menzies

Makeup and motorized vehicles seldom go together. Taking your eyes off the road and hands off the steering wheel in order to apply lipstick or eyeliner not only requires considerable ambidextrous skills, but it can be downright dangerous. Yet, what’s a gal to do when time is of the essence and she’s got to get to Point B looking good?

Sharona Kesnig of Richmond Hill, Ont. thinks she might have the answer.

When the registered aesthetician heard that a client had a close call while fumbling with makeup behind the wheel, Kesnig began thinking about a device that would allow driving women to apply makeup in a safe, hands-free fashion.

Her solution: the Makeup Tentacle, a prototype invention that holds makeup in place while allowing the driver to concentrate on the commute at hand.

Kesnig says she was actually inspired by the 2004 flick, Spider-Man 2 – or more accurately, the character of Dr. Octopus. The not-so-good doctor had four mechanized metal tentacles that could expand and contract at will and were adroit at holding myriad items.

The thirtysomething Kesnig sourced material that emulated the appendages. But instead of using it to clobber her friendly neighbourhood wall-crawler, Kesnig’s metallic tentacle is utilized to grasp lipstick, eyeliner and any other makeup applicator a woman requires.

One end of the device is attached to the dashboard of her Dodge Caravan while the other end holds in place the required makeup applicator. The end result: the Makeup Tentacle allows Kesnig to keep her blue-grey eyes on the road and her well-manicured hands firmly on the steering wheel.

“It’s all about enjoying the best of both worlds,” she says. “The Makeup Tentacle allows a woman to concentrate on her driving but she can also arrive at work looking like a million bucks. It’s the perfect device for our time-famished world.”

Kesnig says the device is still in the prototype stage and she has no idea when (or if) it will ever be brought to market. (She welcomes input from others and can be reached at sharona.kesnig@yahoo.com.)

“It [Makeup Tentacle] could be the next big thing or it might end up being one of those ‘What were they thinking?’ kind of inventions,” she says with a laugh.

In the meantime, Kesnig says she’s happy to own a prototype device that allows her to put on makeup behind the wheel in a completely safe – and non-distracted – fashion.

K no, just no…. this might even be worse… sure your looking at the road (which you could do before) but your more concentrated on moving your head to get the make up on… which in the end is just as bad… this isn’t an improvement, it’s just a displacement of the problem… horrible, a horrible idea I tell you

Posted by: Steve | 2009-06-18 1:44:30 PM
The only way to apply makup in a car is if SOMEONE ELSE IS DRIVING!!!
If you REALLY need to apply makup while you are driving… then you need to wake up sooner then you do.
if you are applying makup while driving, you are applying makup and not paying attention to the road.
People don’t seem to understand that they are in control of a 2000 lb machine made of metal and glass that has the ability to destroy personal property and take lives if you are not paying attention to DRIVING the car/truck.
If you are behind the wheel and applying makup, jabbering on the phone, eating your attention is NOT on the road. it doesn’t even matter if you are using a bluetooth while you are yakking on the phone. if your talking on the phone (even with the bluetooth) you are STILL paying more attention to your conversation then the road.
If you are driving, THEN DRIVE!

Posted by: S Kennedy | 2009-06-18 2:29:19 PM
I hope that the “Tentacle” in the picture is attached to the steering wheel and not to the dashboard! If it IS attached to the dashboard, Susie Snowflake is going to have a lot of trouble making turns that require the steering wheel to be rotated more than 90 degrees! Whoops!

Posted by: Anonymous | 2009-06-19 7:31:54 AM
Are you serious? Do you really think this is the way to make fast cash by inventing something so life threatening to yourself and other drivers on the road. When your on the road DRIVING you must be fully concentrated at the task at hand! Driving is NO JOKE! you drive to get from point A to point B ONLY!! not to apply make up, shave your face, brush your teeth, change your clothing, paint your nails, fix your hair, watch movies, play with your playstation.. etc… all these things should be done in the privacy of your home like a classy, civilized human being!
Smarten up people!!!

Book Review – The Actor and the Housewife (ARC)

The Actor and the HousewifeThe Actor and the Housewife, A Novel

ISBN 978-1596912885
(Available NOW!)

The Actor and the Housewife is an entertaining romantic drama with depth, emotion and humour; I couldn’t put it down!”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“A very different kind of fantasy from New York Times bestselling author Shannon Hale.
What if you were to meet the number-one person on your laminated list—you know, that list you joke about with your significant other about which five celebrities you’d be allowed to run off with if ever given the chance? And of course since it’ll never happen it doesn’t matter…
Mormon housewife Becky Jack is seven months pregnant with her fourth child when she meets celebrity hearththrob Felix Callahan. Twelve hours, one elevator ride, and one alcohol-free dinner later, something has happened…though nothing has happened. It isn’t sexual. It isn’t even quite love. But a month later Felix shows up in Salt Lake City to visit and before they know what’s hit them, Felix and Becky are best friends. Really. Becky’s husband is pretty cool about it. H er children roll their eyes. Her neighbors gossip endlessly. But Felix and Becky have something special…something unusual, something completely impossible to sustain. Or is it? A magical story, The Actor and the Housewife explores what could happen when your not-so-secret celebrity crush walks right into real life and changes everything.”

The Actor and the Housewife had me from page one! I read this wonderful book in one sitting; it’s just that good! This smoothly-flowing story is about the quirky and confident Becky Jack and the sexy-as-hell Felix Callahan. Becky has always secretly had a crush on the Superstar Hunk and she is shocked and awed when he shows genuine interest in her, despite the fact that she is a happily married woman with several children. Once Becky and Felix meet, their lives become entwined and their hearts get tangled up in a mess of insecurities and confusing desires. This isn’t a soap opera-type story full of vulgarities and sex; it is actually very genuine and in-depth; a very human story about choices, desire, love and devotion to family. As the story progressed, I was pleasantly surprised when at several points throughout, I was brought to tears with the poignancy of the moment; a real roller coaster of emotion and feeling. One negative was my disappointment at the ending; I can’t go into detail because I don’t want to ruin the story, but let me just say that it was rather abrupt, felt forced and for me, was anti-climactic. Still in all, it was a good book because it made me smile, laugh and cry.
I recommend this book.

Book Review – Frenchman’s Creek

Frenchman’s Creekfrenchmans-creek
Written By: Daphne du Maurier
Published By: Sourcebooks Landmark an Imprint of Sourcebooks Inc., 2009 (Originally Published in 1941), 284 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-1402217104

Frenchman’s Creek starts out slowly but quickly picks up speed; a story of a spoiled english woman who craves freedom, love and adventure.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Jaded by the numbing politeness of Restoration London, Lady Dona St. Columb revolts against high society. She rides into the countryside, guided only by her restlessness and her longing to escape.
But when chance leads her to meet a French pirate, hidden within Cornwall’s shadowy forests, Dona discovers that her passions and thirst for adventure have never been more aroused. Together, they embark upon a quest rife with danger and glory, one which bestows upon Dona the ultimate choice: sacrifice her lover to certain death or risk her own life to save him.”

Frenchman’s Creek started out rather slowly. Instead of making me pity the Lady Dona St. Columb, I rather disliked her at the beginning of the story. Perhaps the author intends for the reader to make the emotional journey with Dona as she changes and explores her freedom and that’s exactly what I did. With lyrical prose, this smoothly-flowing story will take you along on some wild adventures and dangerous escapades full of adrenaline and G-rated romance. Though I found Dona to be spoiled and self centered, there was a part of me that could identify with her need to escape, especially when you consider the time in which she lived; women were repressed and usually had to follow the rule of their husbands regardless of their own hopes and desires. Dona however, was able to work around some of these constraints because of her lenient and somewhat careless husband. When Dona arrives at Navron House with only her two children and their nanny, she is looking for peace and serenity; a break from the stench and artificial decorum of London. When Dona finds strange inconsistencies with her hired help and other odd items around the home, she begins to explore the grounds of Navron House with purpose; searching for an adventure that she feels unlikely to find. Dona and a French Pirate meet and begin a whorl wind friendship that shows Dona how to be “real” and how to feel alive for the first time in her life; her thirst for adventure is whet as she spends more and more time with the Pirate. As danger and intrigue swirls and time starts to catch up with them, what will Dona do? Can she go back to her tedious, dull life as a mother and wife or will she throw caution to the wind and embrace a life of exhilaration and independence?
I recommend this book.

Kill for Me is a dark thriller that explores the terrifying world of online predators and sex trafficking; it’s gritty, intense and fiendishly-satisfying!”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Five teenage girls have been viciously attacked. One survived. Only she can reveal the secrets of a disturbing ring of people who kidnap and sell teenage girls on the black market. But those responsible for the crimes will do whatever it takes to maintain her silence.
Susannah Vartanian and Luke Papadopoulos have both sworn to stop the murderers for their own personal reasons. The investigation leads them to the shady realm of Internet chat rooms, where anyone can mask his or her identity. They soon discover a chain of deception so intricate they don’t know whom to trust. Finding comfort in each other’s arms, they begin to unravel the intricately knotted threads, but the killers are ruthless and determined, and won’t hesitate to take extreme measures to insure their anonymity and keep their business intact. When Susannah proves to be inexplicably linked to the crimes, her life is soon in danger, and Luke will do everything he can to save the woman he loves.”

Kill for Me is fast-paced; a page turner that keeps you guessing until the end! I was really pleased with this story because it gave me a lot of clues, yet I STILL wasn’t able to pick out one of the killers; I was stunned when the main villain was revealed. This book reads like a block-buster movie and I for one, would like to see it adapted to film…this is a movie that I would go to the theatre to see! There were some shocking and unexpected plot twists and some very typical ones for a book in this genre. The love scenes, though few and far between, were very intense and highly sensual. I would have liked a little more graphic detail in some of the scenes as it would have made the story that much more realistic and would have pulled the reader deeper into the book. The characters are well developed, each with a distinct personality that sometimes left a bad taste in my mouth; I wanted the bad guys to meet a terrible end and hoped for the good guys & gals to win the day. Luke Papadopoulos is strong and steadfast, yet he is very vulnerable because of the atrocious content that he is exposed to in his line of work; his sense of failure and his powerlessness hangs over him like a dark cloud. Susannah Vartanian has secrets from her past that have come back to haunt her; her tough outer facade begins to crumble under the weight of the investigations and during the search for victims; for those who might have been spared had she been braver in the past. Can Luke and Susannah work with the investigative team to unravel the mysteries surrounding the kidnapping and trafficking ring or will they become ensnared in the deceitful web of lies and become targets themselves? You’ll have to read it to find out!
I highly recommend this book!
