Friday's Find Book Reviews By Bobbie

We’ll chat about a fascinating book, audiobook, movie, blog, website, etc. It might be trendy or unpopular, old or new…and it’s sure to be interesting and it’s hosted by yours truly! Please offer your opinions and thoughts on our Friday’s Find!

This Friday’s Find is a:

WEBSITE

It’s called “Pink Cake Box: Specializing in sweet…

Okay, so I’ll admit that I was looking for goodies on the Internet; a massive craving for baked treats came over me so instead of eating the fattening stuff (that’s what I really wanted to do!!) I decided to look for “pictures” of some sumptuous treats that I could drool over instead. lol

So one of  the many websites that I came across during my hour-long (or so) surf was Pink Cake Box and the more I looked around their website, the worse my cravings got! I can’t even express the yummyness and the sheer creative genius of each beautifully-crafted work of art. You really MUST see them for yourself!

They sell Wedding cakes (cakes for ALL occasions really), cupcakes, cookies and they all look SOOOOOO delicious; it’s practically a crime. lol

I’ll add a few pictures from their website so that you have an idea of what’s in store for you:

I know, they all look too beautiful to eat… Can you imagine bringing one of these confections to a wedding, anniversary, birthday party, etc? Everyone would love you! :) So take a few moments and pop over to Pink Cake Box and if you are lucky enough to live nearby and you happen buy something from them, then please, for goodness sake, let us know how it tastes!! :)

Book Review – Escape

Escape: A Wyoming Historical NovelEscape
Written By: Jean Henry Mead
Published By: ePress-online, Inc.
Date: 2008
Pages: 251
Format: Paperback
ISBN: 978-1934258217

Escape sweeps you back to the Wild West; where ranchers and outlaws battled for survival in an unforgiving landscape.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“ESCAPE creates a vivid account of the days when posses pursued Wyoming bank robbers. Andrea Bordeaux lives with her grandparents. When outlaws arrive, her grandmother shears Andrea’s long hair, puts her in overalls, and calls her Andy, hoping to protect her. Unfortunately, the outlaws take Andy with them and leave her grandparents injured. Andy finds herself thrust into the midst of Wild Bunch members who take her to the Hole in the Wall, where they plan the Belle Fourche Bank robbery. Only Billy knows the truth about her gender and she’s sworn him to secrecy. Following an attack by a vicious outlaw intent on carving her face, Butch Cassidy himself promises she can return home after their planned bank job. Meanwhile, the Four-State Governor’s Pact is enacted to rid the country of outlaws. ESCAPE provides a fascinating glimpse into the legendary outlaws of Wyoming. Historical fans will thoroughly enjoy their visit with Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch.”

Escape is gritty, authentic and brilliant! I’ve watched Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and a few western movies in my time and I really have to hand it to Jean Henry Mead; she’s captured the essence and the vivid intensity of the Wild West in this novel. The story of Andy (Andrea Bordeaux) and her plight is the main focus of the story though a western wouldn’t be complete without the requisite hold-ups, saloons and posses hunts; this book has it all! When Andy is kidnapped by a gang of outlaws and taken away from her Grandparents, the gang assumes that she’s a boy and makes her an unofficial member of the gang for the time being. There is a lovely romantic element that is fairly subdued and compliments the rest of the story nicely. With skilfully written characters and breathtaking landscapes, this Western novel takes you on a daring ride over dusty hills and through sagebrush-dotted plains. We’re given some interesting glimpses of some of the West’s most notorious outlaws and we get to see things from their perspective. I’m not a western fan by nature but Jean sure has made a believer out of me!
I highly recommend this book for Historical Fiction readers who yearn for the old West and its untamed wildness!

Book Review – Lady Anne and the Ghost’s Revenge (ARC)

Lady Anne and the Ghost’s Revenge (Book 2)Lady Anne and the Ghosts Revenge
Written By: Donna Lea Simpson
Published By: Sourcebooks Casablanca
Date: August 2009
Pages: 368
Format: Mass Market Paperback
ISBN: 978-1402217920
(*Publication has been delayed…future publication date unknown*)

Lady Anne and the Ghost’s Revenge is a lightly romantic, adventure-filled historical romance.”

Product Description - Back of the book
“A FASCINATING AND EXASPERATING YOUNG LADY…
After the Marquess of Darkefell offers her the most inopportune marriage proposal, Lady Anne Addison flees to the Cornwall coast for a bit of sun and rest. But the place is anything but restful, with smugglers on the beaches, ghostly apparitions in the night, and the obsessively passionate marquess in hot pursuit of her…
A COMPELLING AND MASTERFUL MAN…
Even if she doesn’t want his help, Lord Darkefell is determined to assist Lady Anne in uncovering the secret of the mysterious-and apparently dangerous-goings-on. When a murder takes place, Darkefell is the prime suspect, and now he needs her help even more then she needs his…”

Lady Anne and the Ghost’s Revenge is the continuing story of Lady Anne, as she tries to distance herself from Marquess of Darkefell and ends up in more trouble then she’d bargained for. The Marquess is darkly handsome and very intense; his devotion to Lady Anne, though sometimes misguided, is very sincere and heartwarming. The story itself is fast-paced, has some interesting plot twists full of intrigue and a sprinkling of g-rated romance. I found many of the names of the people and places just a little bit silly; it seemed to me anyhow, that many of the names were just random one-syllable words mashed together. This is book 2 of 3 in a series (as far as I can tell) and it is different from many traditional Romance formats in that the relationship between these two strong-willed characters takes place over the 3-book span; there isn’t a conclusion to their relationship until book 3 (at least I hope it ends there). This particular format isn’t my cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be yours.
I recommend this book for readers who are looking for a historical romance that is heavy on adventure and light on the romantic.

Hail in July!

Yes, HAIL in July…it was 18 Degrees C (64.4 Degrees F) @ 11:50pm on Saturday night and we’d been watching the weather warnings for several hours.  Here’s what they were saying at Environment Canada (I’ve blacked-out the cities and towns):

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING: BonnyvilleSt. Paul - Cold LakeLac La Biche Issued at 11:54 PM MDT SATURDAY 18 JULY 2009

AT 11:50 PM RADAR INDICATED A LINE OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS JUST OVER COLD LAKEAND EXTENDING NORTH THAT IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LARGE HAIL AND STRONG WINDS. THIS LINE IS MOVING EAST AT 50 KM/H. THIS IS A WARNING THAT SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE IMMINENT OR OCCURRING IN THESE REGIONS. REMEMBER THAT SOME SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCE TORNADOES. LISTEN FOR UPDATED WARNINGS. NOTE..A SUMMARY OF ALL WARNINGS AND WATCHES FOR NORTHERN ALBERTA IS AVAILABLE IN THE WWCN16 CWWG BULLETIN ISSUED IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THIS BULLETIN. PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST PUBLIC FORECASTS FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

AN UNSTABLE AIRMASS HAS RESULTED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS CENTRAL ALBERTA. SOME OF THESE STORMS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BECOME SEVERE.

We did have some crazy-strong wind, savage lightning, a torrential downpour and hail. Luckily there weren’t (as far as we know) any other issues…no tornado as far as we know.  The worst part of it lasted about 20 minutes and now there’s just rain and lightning…I know, I know…I shouldn’t be on the computer during a storm.

So, here are some pictures that vividly illustrate what I’ve been gabbing about:

HPIM2414A picture of our front lawn…notice the hail & the gnome? ;)

HPIM2432This is a picture of the top of my son’s screened-in soccer arena (it’s 6 feet tall and about 20 feet around)…DH stood up on a chair to take this picture of the hail that had collected on top…that’s DS inside the soccer arena, taking some pictures of his own.

HPIM2423DH and I collected some of the hail in a bowl to show our DS; he was REALLY excited abut seeing them close-up!!! Yes, it hurt a little, getting pinged with the hail as it was falling, but I didn’t want the hail to melt before DS had a chance to examine them. ;)

The bits of hail varied in size, some as small as dimes with others as big as golf balls, and everything in between!

So everything is okay and we all made it through fine…but what a thing to see, buckets of hail on the 18th of July!

Update: in the bright light of day, DH noticed that we have about 30 or so dents in the top of our car from the hail…they’re pretty small so we’re just going to leave it be.  No sense getting insurance to cover it (which raises rates), just to have it happen again, possibly very soon.  Maybe, after a couple more thunderstorms that have hail…once the car looks more like a pock-marked golf ball…then we’ll get it fixed.  lol ;)

Book Review – No Such Creature

No Such CreatureNo Such Creature
Written By: Giles Blunt
Published By: Random House Canada
Date: October 14th, 2008
Pages: 270
Format: Hardcover
ISBN: 978-0679314318

No Such Creature takes you on a wild ride rampant with perilous exploits, camaraderie and greed.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“Tooling across the American southwest in their giant Winnebago, Max and his nephew, Owen, seem harmless enough, the actorly old fellow spouting Shakespeare like a faucet while his young charge trots him through select tourist destinations along the road. But appearances, as you might imagine, can be deceiving.
Old Max is actually a master thief, and young Owen’s summer vacation is his careful apprenticeship in a life of crime. Pulling heists is scary enough, but ominous signs point to the alarming fact that The Subtractors are on their tail, criminal bogeymen who stop at nothing to steal from other thieves. The road trip soon turns into a chase, by turns comic and horrifying. The most disturbing twist: Owen’s slow realization that the person he loves most in the world is the one who can do him the most harm.”

No Such Creature is a fast-paced mystery/crime drama that engages the read and is very hard to put down. With some clever plot twists, a great storyline and well developed characters; this book grabs your attention and hangs on tight. Owen and Max have a wonderful relationship even if it’s a little out of the ordinary; their familial love for one another keeps them strong through tough times and makes the good times that much more enjoyable. The banter between these two men is witty and very entertaining! When risky heists, speedy getaways and opposing factions threaten their livelihood, Max and Owen do their best to keep things running smoothly. Then Owen meets a beautiful young woman and his life changes forever. The 3-some travels together as meals are shared and Max’s “Achilles heel” becomes more evident and threatens to endanger them all. There was a small amount of swearing, but it wasn’t out of context. The one problem I had with this book was the ending; it felt forced and prematurely shortened.

Book Review – The Killing Tree: A Novel

The Killing Tree: A NovelThe Killing Tree
Written By: Rachel Keener
Published By: Center Street a division of Hachette Book Group Inc.
Date: 2009
Pages: 327 pages
Format: Trade Paperback
ISBN: 978-1599951119

The Killing Tree is gritty and compelling; an emotionally-haunting story of life in a small, mountain top community.”

Product Description – From Amazon.com
“It’s the summer after Mercy Heron graduates from high school, and she’s living in the household of her domineering grandfather and a grandmother whose behavior has always been erratic–some folks even call it crazy. They’ve raised Mercy since her mother died giving birth to her under the June apple tree, after Father Heron locked her out and ignored her pleas for help.
Mercy’s days are spent working at the local diner, and hanging out with her wild best friend Della. Unlike Della, she’s never seriously considered leaving the insulated community on Crooked Top mountain. Not until that summer when she meets Trout, a man who opens Mercy’s eyes to a world beyond what she’s known–both physically and emotionally. Their relationship must be kept secret, because Father Heron won’t approve of his granddaughter being involved with a migrant worker. But when Mercy tries to escape, she’ll learn just how powerful, and ruthless, her grandfather can be. And the truth of her past will threaten to forever bind her to the mountain.”

The Killing Tree‘s title alone is enough to pique ones curiosity. As I began reading the story I was immediately drawn into Mercy’s emotional struggle and felt very strongly towards many characters whose lives impacted the teen-aged girl in a negative way. Mercy’s Grandfather in particular, is a real (insert curse word here)! As the story unfolds, we learn more about Mercy’s history and what her plans are for the future. Along the way we meet Mercy’s best and only true friend on Crooked Top Mountain, “dazzling” Della. Each of the characters in the story is painstakingly drawn to help the reader feel more connected to the story and leaves them wanting more. With a smoothly-flowing story that has extremely emotional overtones, The Killing Tree explores love, loyalties, religious zealotry, hope and redemption. When Mercy meets Trout, she begins to flourish, finally understanding that she can have more then her blighted past has promised her thus far. Love blossoms and danger lurks as freedom is tasted and it all seems too good to be true. At about 1/3rd of the way through I figured out one of the major plot twists; but no need to worry, it didn’t ruin the rest of the story.
I recommend this book for readers looking for a strong, emotional drama written with vivid characterizations and darkly-beautiful settings.

A question…may I have your opinion please?

Hi All,

I’ve been wondering about something and I was hoping that you could give me your opinions and help me to decide.

I have been debating on having a list (posted on my blog) of all the upcoming review books that I have waiting on my bookshelf.  The question is: should I post a full list of all the upcoming review books or not?

I usually just post the books that I am currently reading and those I have finished reading, that are waiting for review.

What, in your opinion, are the  positives and/or negatives of posting all the books that I have waiting for review?

I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Thanks a bunch!!

-Bobbie

The love of OLD books…

Old Books

I have always been fascinated by old books; sometimes it’s the yellowed pages, the slightly musty smell and the embossed cover that catches my attention and other times its the sheer love of old books and the wonderful connection they have with the past that compels me to buy them. I usually don’t read them from cover to cover, though I will read a sentence here and there; I don’t want to risk any possible ripping of the brittle seams or cracking of the old bindings.

There are a few books in my rather small collection that I have a real soft spot for. The following 3 images are collages made up of pictures pertaining to 3 specific favourites of mine. I hope you enjoy them and feel free to ask for more information if you’re curious about any of them.

A World History

 The Straight Gate

  Robinhood and His Merry Men

If you are a collector of old books too, I would LOVE to see some pictures of your old, treasured books and find out more about them!!

As always (((hugs)))    :)
