“The Smart One and the Pretty One is a humorous, fun-loving story of sisters who meddle in each other’s lives with heart-warming results.”
At nearly thirty years old, Ava Nickerson is a demure and successful attorney. Her life is well-ordered and calm, just the way she likes it.
Despite the similarities in their looks and closeness in age, Ava and her younger sister Lauren, are polar opposites.
Lauren’s carefree ‘beauty queen’ lifestyle has been sublime thus far and even though her wallet can’t handle her fashionista spending habits, it doesn’t slow her down one bit.
Ava wants only the best for here sister and tries to inspire some change by getting Lauren’s signature on a ‘contract’ that limits her younger sister’s spending for one year. Unfortunately, Ava has a very heavy-handed way of going about it and an upset and offended Lauren can’t help but feel bit resentful and tries to return the favour.
After all, that’s what sisters are for!
When Lauren finds a silly contract that her mother wrote up years ago with a neighbour, she has just the inspiration she needs to give Ava a taste of her own medicine. The silly contract had ‘betrothed’ Ava and the neighbour’s son, twice-divorced Russell Markowitz to one another in childhood.
Though the contract was obviously not binding, it gave Lauren the idea to play matchmaker.
The Smart One and the Pretty One is a touching and charming story about sisters dealing with their mother’s illness and some difficulties in their own lives.
I really enjoyed the storyline; it flowed well and was very entertaining.
I have a sister of my own and though we don’t get along very well anymore, much of the relationship that Ava and Lauren had, rang true for me.
The characters were very well written and genuine.
Despite the angst and meddling, the sisters genuinely love one another and it all works out well in the end.
This is a great book for women of all ages to read and I recommend it.
